Sagayan characters are introduced through Kuntao Silat martial arts (practice in Southeast Asia) dance through each of their discipline
as follows: Paramata Bantugan with Langka footwork, Balatamay Lumena with Bageleb, knee spins, Alongan Pidsayana with kiring or headshakes and use of kampilan

The patutunong (shaman), together with the community, summons the spirit for ipat, the healing ritual through the chant (daging) and music (tagunggo). Inspired classic sagayan is performed, while the sagayan warriors are seated in place in trance like

Sagayan is the true and ancient dance that predates Islam and Christianity of Maguindanaon people from Cotabato, Mindanao, Philipppines. It is performed as a ritual for healing called ipat or as a festive dance for wedding, enthronement, and other festive celebrations. The attire, props, music, and dance movements consist of important meanings serving overall as medium to the friendly spirit called “tonong”. Today a festive version of the dance called, Kalilang, is performed for weddings and other festive celebrations to bring good fortune.

*The premiere of the program at SF Trolley Dances 2021 is a work in progress. The full program, with its full eleven segments, will be premiered in March 2022 presented by The Los Angeles Art Box and Parangal in Los Angeles through KATUTUBO
Sambuyoga Malna is commissioned by Epiphany Dance Theater as part of the 18th Annual San Francisco Trolley Dances and its program is part of the 2021 Living Cultures grant program with the efforts of archiving, through video documentary, the traditions of ipat and evolution of Sagayan.
